4 Days Mount Meru

Meru has one route to the top and can be attempted for three days but we highly recommend doing for four days for acclimatization. Most alpines uses Meru for acclimatization before the Kilimanjaro climb. The mountain has less snow formed at the volcano eruption.
Unlike Kilimanjaro when you are climbing the Mount Meru you have to be escorted by an armed ranger(s) as you pass through the Arusha National Park. It is at this time when you will enjoy the walking safari as you pass the groups of African buffaloes, Zebras, Black andwhite colobus monkey just little wildlife to mention.

The Momela and Ngurdoto Lakes are rich in birdlife as you trek to the mountain; birds like Pelicans and Flamingo are closely seen.

Upon arrival to Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred for overnight accommodation for B&B. Your head guide will meet you for your briefing, gear check and arrange for you to hire any equipment you may need.

  • Tarangire National Park is almost 3000 sq. km in size and is probably best known for its huge numbers of elephants and baobab trees.
  • The name of the park comes from the Tarangire River which crosses through the park. Tarangire is especially spectacular during the dry season (June – November) as wildlife concentrations rival that of the Serengeti (since enormous populations of elephants and other animals are drawn to the Tarangire River as their only source of water).
  • With its varied habitats and permanent water in the Tarangire River, the park is home to over 2000 elephants and 500 bird species.
  • Late afternoon you will head to your accommodations for an overnight sleep.

Day 3: Lake Manyara NP to Serengeti National Park

  • After breakfast, you will depart for Serengeti National Park with a picnic lunch box.
  • Serengeti National Park is the world’s last great wildlife refuge as it contains an estimated three million large animals, most of which take part in a seasonal migration that is one of nature’s wonders. The area covers 14,763 sq. km and the name Serengeti comes from the Maasai ‘Siringet’, meaning endless plains.
  • You will enjoy the afternoon game drive before heading to your accommodations for overnight sleep.

Soul of Tanzania Safari

Day 4: Serengeti National Park

  • Early morning after breakfast, you will enjoy a full day in different parts of Serengeti!
  • The Central Serengeti offers superb game viewing all year round due to its abundance of resident animals. Specifically, the Seronera River Valley in Central Serengeti is a ‘must see’ on every safari regardless of the specific month of travel.
  • Game viewing in Central Serengeti is at its best during the dry season (June – November) as resident animals are more concentrated in the immediate area due to the lack of water in the plains. Resident herbivores include impala, buffalo, hippo, warthog, topi, hartebeest, and giraffe. Resident carnivores include lions and leopards.
  • Late afternoon you will head back to your accommodations for the overnight sleep.

Soul of Tanzania Safari

Day 5: Serengeti National Park

  • Another full day in Serengeti National Park.
  • There are several documented resident lion prides just within a one-hour game drive radius from Seronera.
  • During the dry season, the resident pride begins to shift west and north in their territories and concentrate in the central region of the park. The dry season is a particularly good time for lion viewing in the Central of the Serengeti National Park.
  • Central Serengeti is also one of the best areas in Africa to spot the elusive leopard. You may be lucky enough to encounter this majestic cat in the branches of the sausage trees that dot the banks of the Seronera River.
  • Later in the evening, you will head to your accommodations for overnight sleep.

Soul of Tanzania Safari

Day 6: Serengeti National Park Ngorongoro Conservation Area

  • In the morning after breakfast, you will enjoy a final half-day in Serengeti before heading to the Ngorongoro Conservation area for another game viewing.
  • A half-day will be spent in the Ngorongoro Highlands.
  • Ngorongoro Highlands are situated within the designated Ngorongoro Conservation Area which protects the land of the area and the traditional Masai way of life within it. Of course, the Crater itself is the main attraction of the Conservation Area, but equally amazing are the highlands that roll on around the Crater.
  • This is a vast, undulating volcanic landscape, dotted with craters and lakes and oozing minerals and fertile soil. Ngorongoro Conservation Area should not be missed on a northern Tanzania safari.
  • Late afternoon you will head to your accommodations for overnight sleep.

Soul of Tanzania Safari

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

  • Early in the morning, you will descend into the crater for a game sighting.
  • Often labeled as the eighth natural wonder of the world, the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact crater in the world. About 2 million years ago the Ngorongoro volcano erupted, and its walls collapsed.
  • The volcano floor sank to create a natural enclosure with its 600 m tall walls. At over 19 kilometers wide, Ngorongoro Crater is filled with great areas of acacia forest, hippo-filled swamps, and open grasslands.
  • These different habitats contain over 30,000 animals including elephants, warthogs, flamingos, magnificent birdlife, the rare black rhinoceros, and all the predatory cats.
  • The Masai can also be seen grazing their cattle alongside the buffalo and wildebeest. Later you will ascend from the crater and head straight through Arusha City to the Airport. Or extended accommodation can be arranged for an extra fee. And it marks the end of our Soul of Tanzania Safari

  • After breakfast, we will start our Tanzania Family Safari and head to Arusha, A full day of activities in Arusha National Park. This small park seldom appears on safari itineraries for Tanzania, which is a surprise as it is one of our favorites. At the center of the park is the beautiful Ngurdoto Crater, flanked by steep cliffs and home to an abundance of buffalo that roam the marshy ground found within.
  • Further, into the park, the Momella lakes are also scenic, with an abundant bird population as well as large populations of hippos and buffalo.
  • You will start the day with a short game drive, followed by a guided walking safari across the plains in the shadow of Mount Meru. Giraffes wander past just a few meters away and herds of buffalo graze on the grasses.
  • From here continue to the Momella Lakes where you take a gentle canoe ride across the peaceful waters of the lake, stopping to learn about the birds that you see along the way and perhaps catching a glimpse of a lumbering hippo.

15 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Day 2: Arusha National Park to Tarangire National Park

  • This morning drive to Tarangire where you will spend the night in a delightful tented camp with views toward Lake Manyara.
  • The camp has possibly our favorite pool in Tanzania, on a deck overlooking the plains, with wildlife such as zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe coming almost right up to the edge.
  • Have a relaxing afternoon before heading out for a sunset walk across the plains in search of wildlife. Antelope, zebra, giraffe, and ostrich can all be found here and you can finish up by the campfire as the sun sets.

15 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Day 3: Tarangire National Park

  • A full day of game drives in Tarangire National Park. The park is cut through by the Tarangire River which proves a magnet for all manner of wildlife during the long dry season when the surrounding area becomes completely parched.
  • During the wet season, the wildlife is more scattered but you are still almost guaranteed sightings of Tarangire’s extensive elephant population.
  • Large herds roam the riverbed whilst zebra, buffalo, gazelle, and wildebeest try to avoid the predatory advances of lion and leopard.
  • There is also a remarkable profusion of bird life as the Tarangire swamps are home to 550 bird varieties including many rare species.

15 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Day 4: Mto wa Mbu Town

  • After breakfast drive to the small village of Mto Wa Mbu, at the base of the Rift Valley Escarpment. Take a bike ride through the banana plantations, rice paddies, and small villages that surround the town. (Families with younger children can take a tuk-tuk ride instead).
  • You will also stop at the main produce market in Mto Wa Mbu and a local school. Creative children may enjoy a visit to an artists’ co-operative where they can try their hand at doing a traditional African painting on their own canvas.
  • Join a local family for a traditional Tanzanian lunch before driving on to Karatu for the night.

15 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Day 5: Meet the Hadzabe Bushmen

  • An exciting day today as you head to Lake Eyasi, home to a number of different tribal groups. Most popular for the children will be a visit to a Hadzabe (bushman) family.
  • Learn how to make fire by rubbing a stick vigorously into a hardwood block until wisps of smoke appear which are then used to light dried grass.
  • Practice firing a bow and arrow at a grass target, causing much hilarity with the local boys who will then demonstrate their (vastly superior) shooting skills!
  • You may even be invited to join the bushmen on a hunt in the bush in search of small wild animals – usually rabbits, squirrels, or birds.

15 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Day 6 Ngorongoro Crater

  • You have a full day to visit the Ngorongoro Crater, an ancient volcanic crater that is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife including a very dense population of lions and spotted hyenas.
  • By now children will be very accomplished ‘wildlife spotters’ and you are almost guaranteed to see all of the ‘big five’ (lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo).
  • The views are superb, from the first glimpse of the crater at ‘Heroes’ Point’, through the thick rain forest that covers its sides, down to the rich grassy plains that form its center.
  • Spend the night in a hotel close to the crater rim.

15 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Day 7: Mount Makarot to Serengeti National Park

  • An exciting morning today as you climb an extinct volcano. Located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, at 3,132m Mount Makarot soars above the surrounding landscape offering superb views not only of Ol Deani Volcano but also of the Olduvai Plains.
  • Accompanied by a park ranger you will follow a seldom-used route to the peak, passing at times through waist-high grass and almost other-worldly forest.
  • You may well see various antelope species en route and possibly buffalo.
  • Later continue by road to the Serengeti, with the option to stop en route at Olduvai Gorge. You will spend the night in a remote tented camp, with a campfire at night and a blanket of stars overhead.

15 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Day 8 - 10: Serengeti National Park

  • Two full days to explore the Serengeti with both morning and afternoon game drives.
  • Serengeti National Park is the jewel in the crown of Tanzania’s game parks and offers arguably the best game viewing in Africa.
  • The setting is perfect – a sea of endless plains that stretches to the horizon, dotted with the occasional acacia tree and termite mound.
  • This savannah is home to huge herds of buffalo that every year make the mass migration north, through crocodile-infested rivers, in a frenzied mixture of mating and galloping that is driven by instinct.
  • Pride of lions rule here, their hungry gaze sweeping the savannah for a chance to attack the thousands of eland, impala, and gazelle.
  • Solitary leopards stake out their place in the high branches of the acacia tree and herds of elephants roam at will. This is the Africa that you have always dreamed about.

15 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Day 11: Serengeti National Park to Zanzibar Island

A morning game drive before transferring to the Seronera airstrip for a flight to Zanzibar. On arrival, you will be met by a guide for the transfer to your hotel, in a gorgeous location on a lovely white sand beach. The rest of the day is free for you to relax.

15 Days Tanzania Family Safari

Day 12 - 14: Zanzibar Island

  • Three full days to enjoy Zanzibar. Although it may be hard to tear the children away from the beach or the pool, there are some wonderful excursions here.
  • Perhaps spend a morning exploring the wonderful labyrinthine streets of Stone Town.
  • Most of the city was built in the 19th century when Zanzibar was a thriving trading community, a vital stop on the Spice Route where traders would stock up on cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, and more.
  • It is beautifully well preserved and you can spend hours wandering the narrow streets, stopping in small cafes to sample the local cuisine, following your nose into little alleyways flanked with crumbling colonial buildings, wrought iron balconies, and thick wooden doors decorated with brass studs.
  • Another great activity is a snorkeling excursion on Mnemba Island, home to some of the best snorkeling in East Africa. The visibility is superb and the coral provides a home to darting moray eels, brightly colored starfish, stingrays, and turtles.

  • With a little bit of luck, you might catch a glimpse of the endangered black rhino through the grass.

Cultural Tour to the Hadzabe Tribe

The Hadzabe people are an ethnic group in central Tanzania, living around Lake Eyasi in the central Rift Valley and in the neighboring Serengeti Plateau. The Hadzabe number is just under 1000. Some 300–400 Hadzabe live as hunter-gatherers, much as they have for thousands or even tens of thousands of years. They are the last functioning hunter-gatherers in Africa.
While traditionally considered an East African branch of the Khoisan peoples, primarily because their language has clicked, modern genetic research suggests that they may be more closely related to the Pygmies. The Hadzabe language appears to be an isolated, unrelated to any other.

The Hadzabe people are nomads and thus don’t live in the same place for long. The group only set up camp for several days or even months and then when they have harvested the resources of their current location, they move to another area. Their moves are normally influenced by climate changes and the availability of wild fruits and vegetation for their animals. Nevertheless, the Hadzabe people build homes by weaving small huts out of sticks from the euphorbia bush.

They eat roots, meat, and wild fruits and use alternative medicine to treat their illnesses. However, they utilize sticks and grass to start fires. Their unique lifestyle makes a stay with them an interesting and stimulating experience.

Later, we will drive to Arusha with a picnic lunch en route arriving in the evening

Day Trip to Lake Duluti

Enjoy your day trip to Lake Duluti in Arusha. The Lake is formed inside a volcanic crater and has water throughout the year, mainly from groundwater and seasonal rainfall. The crater is a subsidiary vent to Mount Meru (4566m) that towers over the lake. The depth of the lake is unconfirmed, but locals estimate it at around 700m deep. Lake Duluti forest is about 1100m across and covers an area of 63ha. The walls of the crater – up to 200m high – are mostly covered in a thick forest. These thick forests are home to many reptiles as they provide a suitable environment for hunting and nesting.

The lake itself also provides the perfect habitat for water birds and Duluti is claimed to have up to 130 different species. The most common birds that can be seen include grey herons, fish eagles, cormorants, ospreys, egrets, and kingfishers. However, the lake has abundant fish proven by many groups of cormorants that hang out together to fish. Many locals come to the lake at night to fish, which of course is making competition for food among the wild animals harder.

Day Tour Description

  • A 50-minute drive from Moshi and just a 20-minute drive away from Arusha, in the shadow of Mount Meru, lays a crater lake. The Meru people of the area named it Duluti.
  • We will get a chance to go canoeing to explore the lake from a different perspective. This is a great way to explore the marsh areas of the lake. Here, huge papyrus plants are a noisy, colorful nesting ground for many of the birds. Usually, a canoe trip around the lake takes around 2-3 hours.
If walking is your thing, then the hike around the crater is a ‘must’. A small path leads through the forest that provides enough shade that you can certainly do the walk even at the hottest time of the day.
  • Every now and then, there is a ‘window’ from where hikers can admire birds as well as the breathtaking views of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. Afterward, hikers are accompanied by a ranger from the Duluti forest reserve and the hike around the lake can take more than 2 hours.
